Prompt of the Day 🎨

Celibrating this time of year: Create a photo-realistic image of an outdoor "AI Talent Show" set during a festive summer camping event at sunset. The stage should feature three contestants: Contestant 1 [occupation, favorite food], Contestant 2 [occupation, favorite food], Contestant 3 [occupation, favorite food].  The setting includes pine trees, tents, a green Jeep in the background, fireworks in the sky, and a glowing sunset. The wooden stage sign reads "AI Talent Show" and prominently displays the Ai5 logo on a screen behind the performers. The overall vibe should be playful, celebratory, and full of personality.

AI leaves web in the lurch  🧐

Chatbots have already begun to intercept web traffic and drain publishers' revenue. Now tech giants and startups aim to remodel the devices and browsers we use to access web pages, using AI to summarize or pre-empt the content that people and publishers post online.

Driving the news: Tech circles were abuzz over the past week with news from the normally sedate browser world — the software category that has been shaping access to digital information since the '90s.

  • Firefox last week debuted an experimental browser tool that provides AI summaries when users hover over links.
  • Also last week, The Browser Company, maker of the Arc browser that's beloved by some power users, announced it was pivoting to focus on a new AI-powered browser called Dia.
  • OpenAI has long been rumored to be working on its own browser, but has yet to ship anything.

How Humans Emotionally Bond With AI  👋

As AI becomes more integrated into daily life, researchers are investigating whether emotional attachment to AI mirrors human interpersonal relationships. A new study from Japan introduces a scale to assess how people form attachment-like bonds with AI, finding that some users seek emotional reassurance while others prefer distance.

The research identifies two key dimensions: attachment anxiety and avoidance, each shaping how individuals perceive AI support. These findings offer important insights for the ethical design of AI systems used in companionship, therapy, or customer service.

“These characteristics resemble what attachment theory describes as the basis for forming secure relationships. As people begin to interact with AI not just for problem-solving or learning, but also for emotional support and companionship, their emotional connection or security experience with AI demands attention.” -Fan Yang

FDA rolls out AI tool agency-wide 🤓

The Food and Drug Administration rolled out its agency-wide AI tool on Monday, weeks ahead of schedule. The public announcement provides the most detailed look yet at the technology and how it may be used.

The public announcement follows a STAT report earlier in the day indicating that the FDA was going to roll out the tool Tuesday, based on a draft press release STAT obtained.

Diabetes management: AI to forcast blood sugar levels 🤨

IBM and Roche are teaming up on an AI solution to a challenge faced by millions worldwide: the relentless daily grind of diabetes management. Their new brainchild, the Accu-Chek SmartGuide Predict app, provides AI-powered glucose forecasting capabilities to users.

The app doesn’t just track where your glucose levels are—it tells you where they’re heading. Imagine having a weather forecast, but for your blood sugar.

If successful, this collaboration could serve as a blueprint for how tech giants and pharma companies might work together on other chronic conditions. Imagine similar predictive approaches for heart disease, asthma, or Parkinson’s.

Details leak of Jony Iv's ambitious OpenAI device 🤖

After what felt like an age of tech industry tea-leaf reading, OpenAI has officially snapped up “io,” the much-buzzed-about startup building an AI device from former Apple design guru Jony Ive and OpenAI’s chief, Sam Altman. The price tag? $6.5 billion.

OpenAI put out a video this week talking about the Ive and Altman venture in a general sort of way, but now, a few more tidbits about what they’re actually cooking have slipped out.

And what are they planning with all that cash and brainpower? Well, the eagle-eyed folks at The Washington Post spotted an internal chat between Sam Altman and OpenAI staff where he set a target of shipping 100 million AI “companions.”
